This note is dedicated to the great Romanian mathematician Dan Barbilian, also well known in poetry as the poet Ion Barbu. Some biographical reference points are given and some important directions of his scientific work are pointed out: axiomatic theories, measure theory and oscillatory geometries, modern algebra, the Galois theory concerning the solving of algebraic equations.
